Eschewing carols for the fireplace dvd, flames flickering and the snap and crackle as the wood is consumed. Missing the scent of woodsmoke, but not the choking, coughing part. And likewise eschewing problematic eggnog (we all had salmonella one Christmas day, even the cat) for Bushmill's honey? J'approve.

These decisions are wise today, and going forward.

*ack* salmonella!! SO not festive LOL!!

One year a friend of mine made fresh eggnog, which we had with canapes before going out to a fancy restaurant for dinner. Came back afterward for presents. Barely made it back home before violently ill. A year later...realized I was allergic to eggs, and that was my first attack. LOL!

My vote - go straight for the booze!

I always had teetotal eggnog on hand for my mom and the kids, but the commercial stuff tastes and has a mouthfeel of oil, so I made my own. Despite recently purchased eggs, one Christmas there was at least one contaminated one in the batch, and we all got ill. Bad Christmas. After that, I used Egg Beaters, which are pasteurized, and still better than commercial grocery store eggnog. But with just OH and me, the Bushmills is a far better choice! This means I need to find another use for the festive pitcher that only comes out of the cupboard on Christmas, but ah, well. Such is life, right?

Those sound like very wise decisions, especially about the eggnog - it must have been horrible to have all got salmonella but I'm intrigued about the cat - did it have eggnog too?! :)

Yes, Jenny required a couple of spoonfuls of whatever the humans were having, especially if it was milk-based. Ice cream, cereal milk, eggnog. She and her daughter, Buttercup, were vociferously insistent they be given some potato salad one summer lunchtime. Which they ate every crumb and licked their chops. But that Christmas, with the eggnog, backfired. Didn't stop her demanding it the next Christmas, though.

Cats, right?

Jenny sounds like she was quite a character! I had one cat who loved sweetcorn, and another that loved pizza - mainly the base!
