After I received and was disappointed by the DVDs I ordered from Jubilee through Bonanza, I informed them of the problems I was having with the set they sent:

Case was very much thinner than usual. There was no insert in the case listing the contents of each dvd. There was nothing on each disc but a series of episodes. There was one listing on disc 6 labeled "special features," which my player could not access.

Jubilee informed me they have begun the process of issuing a return label and a refund, no questions asked.

I checked the Amazon and Target listings, wary of the absence of the usual listing of special features. Best Buy had the listing, as follows:

3 audio commentaries
4 Featurettes:
Gag reel
Supernatural: 2016 Comic-Con Panel
The Winchester Mythology: A Hunter's Life
The Winchester Mythology: Clash of the British Men of Letters
The Winchester Mythology: Mary Winchester
Unaired scenes

so I ordered another set from Best Buy. That set arrived today. The slipcase and case are the same thickness as the other season sets. I opened and went through the set, inserting each disc into the player to read the menus. There is an insert listing the contents of each disc, and there are cut scenes, commentary, and other extras on several discs, listed on each disc menu. Disc 6 includes the three Winchester Mythologies, the gag reel, and the 2016 ComicCon panel.

All this is what your factory issued S12 DVD set should contain, no matter who you buy them from.

While I try to find my articulate about the ep itself, just let me say that )

Also, we have snow on the ground this morning. I should get pictures of the garden Buddha, serene with snow on his shoulders. Here he is.

NSM with the spoilers, actually )

In other news, the last time I cut my hair I went from mid-back to about two inches in length overall. It's at mid-back again, and I'm looking kind of longingly at the hair shears. I can do blunt chin length myself, and probably will sometime this week. But I really want it layered, choppy, and messy. I'm gonna need some help with that. Wish me a stylist who listens.

I took some time this morning and rewatched the end scene with Toni and Mr. Whosit in the car, and took down the dialog, word for word, because I have some thoughts.

do the meme where if you had the chance, would you rather meet your favorite fandom characters or the actors who play them. Here's the Supernatural list I stole from [livejournal.com profile] milly_gal

Dean or Jensen:
Sam or Jared:
Bobby or Jim:
John or JDM:
Young John or Matt:
Castiel or Misha:
Charlie or Felicia:
Jody or Kim:
Donna or Brianna:
Lucifer or Mark:
Crowley or Mark:
Balthazar or Seb:
Henry or Gil:
Benny or Ty:
Cain or Tim:

But as I went down the list there were two, maybe three, instances of wanting to meet the characters (I added Pamela). But in *every* instance I'd want to meet the actor, to thank them for the character they brought us, but basically just to talk technique and their experiences in the film industry.

I added a few: the Megs, both Nicki and Rachel, the Rubys (definitely, both actors), the Samanthas, Ferris and Smith, Alona, Adrienne, the Laurens, both Tom and Cohan. I'd love to meet Steven Williams, and Kevin McNally, who played Frank (and Mr. Gibbs, in Pirates of the Caribbean). (Sneaking in after posting to add Osric)

There are several characters I'd not want to meet: Lucifer, Cain, Funboy--um, Kubrick, or Nitti--er, Doc Benton, but I'd love to have conversations with Pellegrino, and Omundson, and maybe Drago and Massee, too. I'm still too angry with Charlie to have a civil conversation with her, but I'd love to meet Felicia.

two posts in two days. I'm trying!

But I feel a mighty neeeeeed! Can anybody--and are you willing to--make a .gif icon of Sam's smile when Mildred says, "Before I got so good looking"? Pretty please? I'll, um. Be extremely grateful? Extoll your virtues far and wide? Cookies? Anybody?

One tiny little note, when director-Marie asked the "Dean" actor why she wasn't wearing the amulet, she said, "It keeps hitting me in my lip."

Before he found out how upset the fans were at its loss, Jensen said at a con he was glad they'd ditched it, because "that thing smacked me in the mouth all the time. I think it may have chipped a tooth."

Meta continuity FTW \o/ !

I have to confess, I'm a little bit eskeered of 10.05. Like, I can't wait for it to be time, but I kind of can't watch it in real time. That's not really a problem, as OH has control of the remote (do not attempt to adjust your dial) through prime time, by mutual agreement. What he dislikes I watch after he goes to bed, since he requires elebenty hours of sleep per night and I'm lucky to stay asleep for five, and those are the early morning hours. Because I learned long ago, not to go to bed until I'm actually falling asleep, or I'll lie awake and curse the darkness and everything that ever went wrong in my life while not sleeping. So he gets the remote while we're both awake and conjugally watching, and I get it when he goes to bed.

So, it's very easy for me to pause, or FF, or replay any bits as needed, and I think it's actually probably better this way--it puts a layer of control in my hands. So, I'm all excited for tonight, but also somewhat trepidatious. I've heard good things, but at this point it's hard to believe. Hold me?

 1. Sam or Dean?--pffft. Both
 2. Favorite Angel?--Uriel, or Gabriel
 3. Favorite Demon?--Abaddon
 4. Favorite evil character?--Stan (Azazel)*
 5. Favorite season?--two
 6. Favorite episode?--AHBL 1&2
 7. Supernatural Ship?--Sam and Dean
 8. Michael or Lucifer?--Lucifer
 9. Least Favorite Character?--don't have one
10. Favorite Supporting Actor?--Jim Beaver
11. Favorite Quote--"Family don't end with blood."

2. Favorite angel--Uriel, because he embodied the fierce, immovable, implacable inhuman majesty of angels. Gabriel, because he blew all of that off and went offline and did his own thing.

4. Favorite evil character--Man, I loved Stan. Our first real exposure to demonkind, and he just enjoyed all heck out of his demonosity. *I have been reminded of my fangirling love and respect for Chris Heyerdahl's Alastair. Who actually might be first for this, come to think.

8. I do love SPN's take on the Prince of Lies, the Morningstar, the fallen angel. Cold, and self-involved, and adept at getting his own way. Pelligrino's Lucifer is clearly loveable, clearly fearsome, clearly broken and vindictive.

11. There are too many to count, most of them Bobby's--the other one that comes to mind is, "Do I look like a ditchable prom date to you?"

I've been sort of quiet about S10 so far. I've taken a step back from meta and deeper discussion, from my own speculation about where I think events are likely to go, from expressing where I'd like to see things go.

I've come to a sort of epiphany about SPN. While it's my show, it doesn't belong to me. I don't write the scripts, I don't break stories, I don't hand down notes from the network. While SPN staff has interacted a lot with fans over the years, and have indicated they listen to "what the fans want to see," I'm not sure that pressure has any real effect. I think writers and directors get fiendish glee out of, "Giving 'em what they say they want, but with a vicious twist!" For example, fans (me included) have wished for seasons we'd get a bodyswap episode, and we did--just not a Sam and Dean switch. Or we've wanted another "Bitch." "Jerk." exchange. And finally we get one--and this one left a bitter taste.

It may be my show, but it doesn't belong to me and I'm just along for the ride the writers give us, however much I may like or hate it. If the dislike overbalances my abiding love, it'll be time for me to stop watching. That point hasn't been reached yet and, in fact, there are definitely things I'm liking about the season so far.

I'm reading other fans' thoughts, and I'll comment when so moved. But for now, I'm keeping a little distance and a wait and see attitude.

Countdown

I didn't really have a chance to put my day nine, season nine countdown post together, let alone get it posted before I lost internet on Sunday. It would be way past anticlimactic to post it now, let alone try and put it together, so I'ma just look forward and see what they make of Season 10.

Not a bad start...

First of all, this is a dream, right?
Sam's prone to hallucinations, we know this about him. So this whole year had to be some psychosis-built fantasy of his while he was locked in some sanitarium trying to recover from the breakdown. Right?

Right? )

Edit: I'm hearing that folks can't see the pics. My internet connection keeps going down like an underpaid sex worker, but when I get that straightened out I'll try to repost the pictures in another format. Sorry, meanwhile.

Season seven was so full of moments to enjoy. I wasn't a huge fan of the Leviathan storyline, but it did get us some memorable moments with Levia-Sam and Dean, SPN_0781

A reprise for the wonderful Mark Pellegrino as Hallucifer

Breaking Sam's belief in reality, even though Dean tries to reassure him what's real.

We learned a little more about Bobby's background, before we lost him in Season seven. There were new characters, Frank and Charlie, as well as returning ones, Kevin and Jodi. There was a lot to like about the season, even as it wobbled off on a strange tangent with the Leviathans. I don't think anyone expected the shock of the ending, when Leviathan leader Dick, Kevin, Dean, and Crowley all disappeared in a flash, leaving Sam not knowing how or where any of them had gone, alone in that Leviathan goo-spattered room. SPN_1409
One thing we were sure of, though. Sam wouldn't rest till he got Dean back.

This is not a cheerful post. Five was not a cheerful season for me, despite some episodes and scenes that aimed at chuckles. Another day I might choose those. Today, S5 makes me sad. Very image heavy behind the cut.

I promise to try and find Season six more cheerful tomorrow.
