I'm...oddly not upset. I've felt this coming, not because the show's not the same sort of format as the other CW shows, or the guys aren't the young hotties of the other shows, or there're no flashy costumes and superpowers.

I've heard the Js say again and again that the show is a cottage industry that keeps a whole community employed, that it's a family, that they have felt and do feel a responsibility for that family and that possibility of continuing employment. But I've also heard them both not-actually-complain, but express regret that their babies are growing up without them being there to see it. That their lives are passing while they're so deeply absorbed in work. I've seen the con videos and observed the microexpressions, and exchanged expressions when such subjects come up.

This isn't a surprise. In one of the articles already online the writer stated this is not a network decision, but a creative one, which is just this side of saying, the guys are finished with this, and want to stop. Maybe to rest awhile. Maybe to move on to something else. But they've done more than could ever have been expected of them, and for them, it's time to stop.

It's also so very gentlemanly and like them to give their fans a whole season's heads up, to give us a chance to pay attention to the farewell tour, to savor it as it winds down to the end.

For myself, I just hope Butch and Sundance are off the storyboard.

ETA: I'd just like to add that closed canon doesn't mean closed fandom. SPN has given us so much fodder for casefics, AUs, RPFs, continued exploration of themes and memes and fairytales. I don't for a second expect SPN fandom to fade just because there are no new episodes. Not every ep in fifteen seasons has been mined nearly bare for fic and art and vids. So, though I know some folks will move on to new shows, to other fandoms, I think we'll still be up and running in SPN for a long time.

Wikipedia to the rescue: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shedim

Shedim is the Hebrew word for demons or spirits and also designates a supernatural creature in Jewish folklore. The word shedim appears only twice (always plural) in the Tanakh, at Psalm 106:37 and Deuteronomy 32:17. It was possibly a loan-word from Akkadian in which the word shedu referred to a protective, benevolent spirit.[3] Both times the term appears in the Tanakh, it deals with child or animal sacrifice to false gods that are called demons.[4] The word may also derive from the "Sedim, Assyrian guard spirits"[5] as referenced according to lore "Azael slept with Naamah and spawned Assyrian guard spirits known as sedim".[6]

I've been sort of bemused lately at all the buzz and PR for Supernatural's Season 13 premiere. Earned, I'm aware, the show having endured this long.

But I remember the first four seasons, when we never knew if we'd been picked up for the next season until the very last minute. The Impala was left ticking in a field as her metal cooled after being T-boned by a semi truck in the first season finale. If the show hadn't been picked up, the Winchester story would have ended in that field.

At the time, the CW was spending what ad budget they had on all the nighttime soaps: Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, etc, and since Dawn Ostroff had no love at all for Supernatural, we were lucky if there was a flash of Jensen and Jared included in a 30 second montage of new and returning shows on the network. I don't even think there were "tonight at 9:00 a new episode of Supernatural" ads for the first two seasons.

So all the excess now, all the comic con panels, the international SPN cons, print and talk show interviews, books on the meta of the show, magazine spreads--whole magazine issues!--devoted to Supernatural. It makes me laugh--I'm just not sure if that's triumph or ironic laughter. Maybe a bit of both.

After I received and was disappointed by the DVDs I ordered from Jubilee through Bonanza, I informed them of the problems I was having with the set they sent:

Case was very much thinner than usual. There was no insert in the case listing the contents of each dvd. There was nothing on each disc but a series of episodes. There was one listing on disc 6 labeled "special features," which my player could not access.

Jubilee informed me they have begun the process of issuing a return label and a refund, no questions asked.

I checked the Amazon and Target listings, wary of the absence of the usual listing of special features. Best Buy had the listing, as follows:

3 audio commentaries
4 Featurettes:
Gag reel
Supernatural: 2016 Comic-Con Panel
The Winchester Mythology: A Hunter's Life
The Winchester Mythology: Clash of the British Men of Letters
The Winchester Mythology: Mary Winchester
Unaired scenes

so I ordered another set from Best Buy. That set arrived today. The slipcase and case are the same thickness as the other season sets. I opened and went through the set, inserting each disc into the player to read the menus. There is an insert listing the contents of each disc, and there are cut scenes, commentary, and other extras on several discs, listed on each disc menu. Disc 6 includes the three Winchester Mythologies, the gag reel, and the 2016 ComicCon panel.

All this is what your factory issued S12 DVD set should contain, no matter who you buy them from.

NSM with the spoilers, actually )

In other news, the last time I cut my hair I went from mid-back to about two inches in length overall. It's at mid-back again, and I'm looking kind of longingly at the hair shears. I can do blunt chin length myself, and probably will sometime this week. But I really want it layered, choppy, and messy. I'm gonna need some help with that. Wish me a stylist who listens.

I took some time this morning and rewatched the end scene with Toni and Mr. Whosit in the car, and took down the dialog, word for word, because I have some thoughts.

do the meme where if you had the chance, would you rather meet your favorite fandom characters or the actors who play them. Here's the Supernatural list I stole from [livejournal.com profile] milly_gal

Dean or Jensen:
Sam or Jared:
Bobby or Jim:
John or JDM:
Young John or Matt:
Castiel or Misha:
Charlie or Felicia:
Jody or Kim:
Donna or Brianna:
Lucifer or Mark:
Crowley or Mark:
Balthazar or Seb:
Henry or Gil:
Benny or Ty:
Cain or Tim:

But as I went down the list there were two, maybe three, instances of wanting to meet the characters (I added Pamela). But in *every* instance I'd want to meet the actor, to thank them for the character they brought us, but basically just to talk technique and their experiences in the film industry.

I added a few: the Megs, both Nicki and Rachel, the Rubys (definitely, both actors), the Samanthas, Ferris and Smith, Alona, Adrienne, the Laurens, both Tom and Cohan. I'd love to meet Steven Williams, and Kevin McNally, who played Frank (and Mr. Gibbs, in Pirates of the Caribbean). (Sneaking in after posting to add Osric)

There are several characters I'd not want to meet: Lucifer, Cain, Funboy--um, Kubrick, or Nitti--er, Doc Benton, but I'd love to have conversations with Pellegrino, and Omundson, and maybe Drago and Massee, too. I'm still too angry with Charlie to have a civil conversation with her, but I'd love to meet Felicia.

two posts in two days. I'm trying!

But I feel a mighty neeeeeed! Can anybody--and are you willing to--make a .gif icon of Sam's smile when Mildred says, "Before I got so good looking"? Pretty please? I'll, um. Be extremely grateful? Extoll your virtues far and wide? Cookies? Anybody?

One tiny little note, when director-Marie asked the "Dean" actor why she wasn't wearing the amulet, she said, "It keeps hitting me in my lip."

Before he found out how upset the fans were at its loss, Jensen said at a con he was glad they'd ditched it, because "that thing smacked me in the mouth all the time. I think it may have chipped a tooth."

Meta continuity FTW \o/ !

I have to confess, I'm a little bit eskeered of 10.05. Like, I can't wait for it to be time, but I kind of can't watch it in real time. That's not really a problem, as OH has control of the remote (do not attempt to adjust your dial) through prime time, by mutual agreement. What he dislikes I watch after he goes to bed, since he requires elebenty hours of sleep per night and I'm lucky to stay asleep for five, and those are the early morning hours. Because I learned long ago, not to go to bed until I'm actually falling asleep, or I'll lie awake and curse the darkness and everything that ever went wrong in my life while not sleeping. So he gets the remote while we're both awake and conjugally watching, and I get it when he goes to bed.

So, it's very easy for me to pause, or FF, or replay any bits as needed, and I think it's actually probably better this way--it puts a layer of control in my hands. So, I'm all excited for tonight, but also somewhat trepidatious. I've heard good things, but at this point it's hard to believe. Hold me?
