fufaraw: mist drift upslope (Sam and Dean hazy)

I want to talk about the obvious effort the writers made to give us Toni the starched, steely, repressed bitch, contrasted with the loving and affectionate mom she became when talking with her son, compared with Mary's iron determination to get her own son back. There's an obvious comparison there. I'm just not sure how much they meant to stress it, whether it's going to be important going forward, or just a passing note in the first two episodes. I suppose we'll have to wait until further into the season to find out. Thoughts, anyone?

I've only actually seen the first...five minutes or so of the ep (I started watching, got as far as Toni demanding that the doctor she woke up at 6a patch Sam up and couldn't deal with her any more).

I'm going to give it a try again in a little bit, but I'm already wary. The British office waits until the world is actually fucking ending to send someone over? And rather than sit down, explain who they are, and, y'know, OFFER TO HELP...they send someone who shoots Sam and then abducts him?

So yeah. Wary.

More thoughts, hopefully, after I actually watch it :)

hahaha. Though I had no problem watching the entire episode from the edge of my seat, I'm inclined to agree with mickeym. The BMOL *absolutely* went about things the wrong way, making awful assumptions about the Winchesters based off their observations on their ability to do their 'job' (which really, started more about them FIGHTING FOR THEIR LIVES; hunting has always been a very personal thing for the Winchesters, and that is probably the biggest oversight the BMOL made in their assessment of them).

I guess I can appreciate that they showed those polarized sides of her, because it makes her a more complex character, but I'm still in the camp of "You hurt my Sammy, you need to die." Perhaps my opinion of her will change as the season progresses, but for now. Nope. XP

Also, there's no WAY I think she's comparable as a mother to Mary. Mary shows compassion AND strength, which I think makes her a much more admirable human in general. So, if they're trying to draw that parallel... nope nope noooope. lol

Thanks for bringing up the topic. I *cannot* wait to see what else this season brings!!

I always feel silly when people have thoughts that somehow totally missed me LOL!!! I didn't pick up on tat juxtaposition of motherhood styles until I read this. I was struck by TOni's different attitude at the end, where she was shaken by how badly she'd underestimated Sam, and that perhaps all was not as she/British MoL thought.

I hadn't noticed that comparison, or that they may have been going for it. I did think her conversation with her kid was a decent way to show the difference between the woman's character in civilian life and her MOL life--and that she's not torturing Sam for fun, but because she needed to, for the job. Which still makes her a bitch in my book.

You know, when she was explaining how civilized and efficient the BMOL were, it made me shiver. I was making the ew face the whole time. It just seemed so...monstrous. Maybe because in our version of things, the monsters have more than a fightin' chance, lol! So American of me. :)

Well, definitely, Toni's no Mary Winchester.

Did anyone else giggle when Toni told Sam she wanted to know about the hierarchy in the American hunters?

The clarity of mickeym's view makes me wonder if the BB (British Bitch - I'm not giving her another name) maybe needs Sam and Dean for some reason. (I was already convinced she's not really trying to help.)

The best way to get to Dean is thru Sam - pretty much the whole Universe knows that. So I'm pretty sure the BB has an ulterior motive, and it could be that she needs them, or plans to use them in some way.
