The ultimate plan is to replace the defunct and never-used dishwasher with a useful rolling cart with a butcher block top. The soffit is hollow, and I'd really like to replace all the upper doors with doors that go to the ceiling. Failing that, beadboard backsplash and soffit, paint all the cabinets white, replace the hardware and relocate it from center doors to the corners of the doors. I can live with sheet vinyl flooring and yellow formica countertops...for a while.

So, where do *you* think the floating shelves should go? Over the desk? Or over the bar? Both? Neither?

Hee! Okay, I will! I have yet to spring this on OH, though. He'll stew about it far away, but when he gets back I can show him pictures (and that people support me on the internet) and he'll go Oh, okay, uh huh. At least, that's the plan.

Now--I love the look of the thick wood shelves, and I think they'll do fine over the desk. But should I do the ones over the bar to match those, or paint them to match the shelves beneath the bar?

Oooh, I love floating shelves. I have a couple over my desk! I say - both. You can never have too much shelf space. :D

And i never use my dishwasher, either, but i'm afraid i can't just remove it - if we ever sold this house, people will want one. *sigh*

Definitely both places! You can never have too many shelves! Every room in my house is lousy with shelves--not all of them attractive but I needs them.

I would be a very grumpy person without my dishwasher. I hate washing dishes so very, very much.

Enh, we're aware we'll be the last people to live in this house. New regs require a slab, and manufactured, rather than 'mobile' standards. They'll pull it, sell it or junk it, and have a slab and a new manufactured home in its place.

It confers a certain amount of freedom. *G*

I used to use every cup, glass, spoon, plate, pot, and pan in the house and have the sink full of dirty dishes. I've thrown them in the oven, in the bathtub and yanked the shower curtain closed, when unexpected company dropped by. I *hated* washing dishes.

I don't know why that changed, but I realized rather than dirty everything and just keep washing and reusing one or two sets of dishes and flatware, I could clean and put away everything and keep washing one or two sets of dishes and flatware. I hate dishwashers. It takes forever to fill one enough to run it. You have to prewash most stuff before it goes in, and half the time it doesn't get clean. You have to load it, you have to unload it and put everything away, and when I want my bunny coffee cup it's invariably dirty, in the dishwasher. Finally, I can't stand the noise they make for a sustained period of time.

Different strokes, of course. But the truth is, the pots, pans, lids, and utensils are usually washed and draining and the stove and counters wiped down before we sit to eat. Afterward, one of us clears the drainer and puts stuff away and wipes down the table while the other washes the plates, glasses, cutlery, and wipes down the sink.

It's just the two of us, though, we're not dealing with a herd of teenagers grazing their way through the kitchen.

I wipe down the range hood, the backsplash or the cabinet fronts, or the fridge or freezer gasket while the coffee drips in the morning. I'm too sleepy to be bored by all the menial-ness of it. Plus I'm too lazy to assemble the correct cleaners and tools and "do it right." Half asleep while waiting for coffee and/or the eggs to boil, or not at all.

omgosh--you're a cleaning warrior! The fridge gasket--what is *that*???

Note to self--when was the last time you actually looked at the fridge, and how much coffee do you need to drink to get this done?

I have alternate spots for the art. The Spitzweig goes by the door where the postcards are now, the mirrors over the washstand get rearranged to include the postcards, because the postcards are pink and girly, and the frame is oak, and the lamp is pink and girly, and the washstand and mirror frames are oak. Not that I've thought about this, or anything.

The owl goes in the bedroom above the dresser mirror, where there's a void. Good gracious, can't have that! The three smalls go where smalls go, tucked in small spaces. See? Wall space for everybody!

Now, next question. I really like the thick wood shelves, and I think they'll do fine above the desk. Should the ones over the bar be the same thick wood? Or be painted to match the shelves beneath the bar?

*Ducks* Um, don't ask me when was the last time I *washed* the inside of the fridge. I do pretty well at throwing out out of date and wilty food (nobody wants to discover a carton of moldy yogurt or cottage cheese from six months ago), but I'm not good at washing down the inside. Oh, yeah, the door frame and the door shelves. But I don't like the duck-and-reach, and I have T Rex arms!!!

The floating shelves are awesome! You could add more to both areas.

I never use my dishwasher, either. It would take forever to fill it up, and I often clean things one plate or dish at a time.

Are you thinking something like this for the cart? Though this might be too big.

It's a pretty cavernous space, once you haul out the dishwasher. I was thinking more like this , especially if we can paint the end panel to more or less match the lower cabinet doors.

Exactly! It's faster just to do them as we dirty them and not have to wait for a full load.

I have a thing with shelves as well, do you think it's an over 35 thing?? I'm 50 and I've been obsessing over shelves for ages :)

No suggestions from me since I have zero design sense, but fill up your house with shelves, it will bring you joy!
