Stolen shamelessly
Nov. 12th, 2017 05:21 pm1. What kind of soap is in your bathtub right now?
I am indulgent about soap. I don't use the tub, but I have hard-milled French soap scented with bergamot in my shower, at the moment. And a bar of Pears by the sink for hand and face washing.
2. Do you have any watermelon in your refrigerator?
If I have melon in my fridge it would be canteloupe.
3. Is there anything moldy in your refrigerator?
Hah! Not now. I just had to scrub it out due to an unfortunate leakage accident.
4. What would you change about your living room?
Replace the treadmill with a stationary bike, and the futon with a chaise.
5. White or wheat/brown bread?
I love the 12-grain that's our standard. There's a local-made sunflower loaf I'm very very fond of right now.
6. What color is your sofa?
Sort of a warm khaki, and the futon is deep bitter chocolate.
7. What color or design is on your shower curtain?
One glass shower door, the tub/shower curtain is tan, embossed with shells.
8. How many plants are in your home?
Houseplants are a peeve of mine—misting and watering leads to overspray and puddles, which are bad for fabrics, framed art, books, wood floors and furniture, and upholstery, and is an invitation to insects, mold, and mildew. I love outdoor plants, but unless it's a kitchen windowsill herb garden, I prefer no plants indoors.
9. Is your bed made right now?
Yes.
10. Do you drink out of glass or plastic most of the time at home?
Plastic water bottle, pottery coffee mugs, china teacups, chunky whiskey glasses, and my special square cobalt blue frosted plastic tumbler for sodas and soft drinks.
11. How many pillows do you sleep with?
Two queen size, continous-spun fiberfill (allergic to feathers and down, foam is too hot), one for my head, one to hug.
12. Do you sleep with any lights on at night?
When OH is away, yes. When he's at home, no.
13. How many ceiling fans are in your home?
One, in the dining room, which though it helps circulate either warm or cool air in the center of the house, we have to turn off when we sit at the table because it strobes the light from the integrated fixture.
14. How often do you vacuum?
As infrequently as possible.
15. What color is your toothbrush?
White with purple accents.
16. Do you have a welcome mat on your front porch?
There's an inset of astroturf that needs removed so I can have a nice welcome mat.
17. Is there anything under your bed?
Monsters?
18. Chore you hate doing the most?
Vacuuming. I'll trade off cleaning toilets, seriously.
19. Do you have any hidden emergency money around your home?
I don't.
20. What color are your walls?
Navaho white, except for green/white/yellow herby kitchen wallpaper and palest pink bathroom wallpaper with teeeeeeny rosebuds, which, seriously, needs either painted or gone away.
21. What does your home smell like right now?
Clean laundry and brewing tea.
22. Favorite candle scent?
Un-? Cinnamon, coffee, lemon and balsam, tea and oranges
23. Who are in the pictures you display?
OH really dislikes family photographs on public display. It's not a hill for me to die on.
24. Do you have plenty of cabinet space in your kitchen?
Yes and no. We have empty spaces, but I'm short, and reach is actually a problem for me. We have a separate pantry for shelf-stable and canned foods, infrequently used appliances, and storage dishes, so the kitchen cabinets are devoted to plates, bowls, mugs, glasses, pots, lids, etc, and most where I can reach them.
25. Ever been on your roof?
Not in this house. In the two-and-a half-story? Sure.
26. How many TVs do you have?
One's enough.
27. What style do you decorate in?
Eclectic, I suppose. Our 1890s glass-doored oak breakfront and pre-1920s family-built fiddle-end oak side table cohabit the dining room quite well with the mid-century modern oak dining chairs and the formica-topped table with its Jetsons-style base. The custom-built new sleek white media shelves tuck happily beneath the original German etchings on the "burg" wall: Nurnberg, Heidelburg, Rothenburg, and Marksburg, centered by an age-spotted beveled mirror in a family-crafted oak frame, c. 1910. My office desk came from Staples, one of my bedroom dressers is fine, American made early 20th century "traditional" that we found at Goodwill, the other was bought off the sidewalk in front of a thrift store, bought unfinished and painted by an earlier owner. My dark mahogany nightstand belonged to my grandmother. His bedroom dressers and nightstand are traditional, walnut finish, and were bought new at a local furniture store. My antique and vintage china is displayed in an Ikea glass-doored Billy bookshelf bought off Craigslist, our books are shelved in stark black-painted bookshelves bought online, plus a low connecting unit hand-built to match by OH. Most of my bears sit in a 1940s crib both I and our kids slept in, my Raggedy Ann dolls and Steiff Muzzle bears sit in authentic Victorian pressback kitchen chairs, and my Eva Baldwin bears sit in the traditional Boston-style rocker we bought at the Yugo store at the PX; I made the cushions from clean quilted crib pads and sewed the covers myself. My grandmother's 1910 era white ironstone pitcher and basin and my mom's 1940s lionfaced Gone With The Wind lamp with handpainted rose panels sit on my grandmother's oak washstand, which dates to the late 1800s. It's no showroom.
28. What temperature in your home is most comfortable to you?
We've kept it at 64F for years, but we seem to be feeling the cold a bit more this year, and we've bumped it up to 66F. Those two degrees make a difference—surfaces are *cool* to the touch, but don't feel like they've just been removed from the fridge.
