System Restore is the ant's pants! I had to do one the day after Sydney's apocalyptic storm after I was in the middle of something and got the dreaded blue screen. When I fired it up again, my laptop and modem were no longer speaking (I think they were having Sam and Dean like issues). One System restore later and, "hello there lovely modem, let's boogie".
So glad you got it fixed, AND managed to not have a brain meltdown during your friend's visit. You are a better woman than me, I would have thrown a tantrum.
