soup!

When we were young and poor and had small children to feed, I kept a pot of soup on a back burner, sometimes for a week. Leftover vegetables, meat bones, whatever was left from meal prep, went into the soup. A can of beans, or carrots, the tag-end of a bag of frozen peas. It was like free soup, and it stretched the food budget appreciably.

It's another pair of galoshes when OH intentionally makes soup. He uses our 8-quart Leyse stockpot, so we always have a vat of soup to share with the neighbors. His usual standard is beef and vegetable with barley. Before my food restrictions, he'd add a No. 10 can of tomatoes and a few potatoes. I can't eat those now, but they really aren't missed. He uses store brand canned beans, corn, peas and carrots, dices small cuts of beef, and occasionally adds a half-pound of ground beef. Mushrooms, a whole onion, halved, a garlic clove or two, black pepper, the odd herb, a handful or two of barley. And shredded fresh cabbage. It cooks for hours, while anybody in the house salivates like Pavlog's dogs from the aroma. That first bowl is fabulous. But you store it in the fridge for a day or two, let those ingredients sit together and get to know each other really well? That next bowl, you're pretty sure this is what they serve in heaven--at least any heaven you'd want to wind up in. And it just gets better, day by day, until, feeding it to the neighbors and people who drop by, it's all gone, all too soon.

So when I say I want to feed Sam, or Dean, or both, soup? You know what I'm talking about.
