10.12 spoilers
Feb. 5th, 2015 07:40 pmI thought Dylan did a good job, even though he didn't resemble Dean, in 9.7, Bad Boys. Not his fault the honchos screwed the timeline and made his Dean older than he played him. Facially, even with the cheeks and the eyebrows, it was obvious he'd studied Jensen's Dean, and set out to play that character at a much younger age.
I wondered at the time what has become of Ridge Canipe, the actor who played Young Dean in Something Wicked, S1, and in A Very Supernatural Christmas, S3, and if the casting people had thought of using him again for either Bad Boys or About a Boy.
After watching About a Boy, I was impressed all over again with Dylan's performance, even moreso when I read the advice Jared gave him about Dean, and how Jensen plays him. I thought Dylan's performance was pretty much spot on, and the rapport between Dylan and Jared was great.
But I did spare a wonder for Ridge Canipe, and went to look up what he's doing these days. I suppose it's unfair to expect child actors to exist, as they are, preserved in amber. But Ridge has https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9l2C27jP4Kw> changed.
And yes, Dylan was by far the best casting for young Dean.

Date: 2015-02-06 01:47 pm (UTC)I thought as an actor Dylan to a really good job, he's definitely worked hard to capture Dean's character. I just wish they'd given him green contacts and maybe pruned his eyebrows a bit more because it just throws me out of the scene every time I look at his face because I don't really see any similarity to Dean at all. Then I sink back in, but it's always jarring.
Best moment in the show though, Dean wearing the Orange hoodie and stripped T-shirt combo from teenage Dean.

Date: 2015-02-06 05:42 pm (UTC)Differences between them, if you have a stop-motion camera or a strobe flash, every "still" moment with Jensen is art, where Jared's portrayed emotion is more fluid, and less effective in stillness.
Neither is *bad* or better than the other. It's a difference in approach and performance, and it's professional astuteness that Jared recognizes it and can communicate it to another performer. Or maybe that's my analytical theater background talking.

Date: 2015-02-06 06:16 pm (UTC)I guess I just found it a slightly odd thing to say, since he's been acting way longer than he ever modelled, but it seems he's rolled up all the various experiences into his own unique style.
Analytical theatre background is good. Let's hear more of it. I can never get enough of Jensen's style being talked about by those in the know.
