I have been a Supernatural fan since first season. I will be a Supernatural fan long after they turn out the lights and lock the door--there'll always be fic and art and discussion going on somewhere, and even if there isn't any new material, I will never read all the fic in my lifetime.

But. During the hiatus, I seem to have fallen headfirst down the Shadowhunters rabbit hole. I haven't felt this squeeful about a show since early-seasons SPN.

It's running on the former Disney family channel, Freeform, and if you have Instant Watch, the first season, plus all aired episodes of season two are available there. Plus I think there's an app or something.

ANYway. Pretty actors*, pretty sets, surprising emotionally deep storylines and relationships for a fantasy genre tv show on a lesser-known channel. Give it a try--what've you got to lose?






























































*case in point: the High Warlock of Brooklyn, Magnus Bane, is wonderfully played by Harry Shum, Jr. previously appearing as Mike Chang on Glee. (point: biceps!) The rest of the cast is gorgeous, as well. I'm smitten. I'm full and overflowing with smit.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that Lisa Berry, SPN's own Billie the Reaper, has a recurring role early in S2.

Is this the same Shadow Hunters that's on Netflix, about Clary Fray who's a demon hunter with angel blood?

I couldn't find the Shadowhunters *tv series* on Netflix. But after I'd watched all the episodes on Instant Watch that have aired, I did order The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones movie on dvd from Netflix's DVD department. And I'm so glad I watched the series first--I might never have given it a chance if I'd watched the movie first. It had a great cast, and a really good look: sets, locations, props, costumes, etc. But somehow it just never jelled the way the series does.

The first season starts off pretty shallow, silly, and fun. But the second season starts hitting some real issues, in a surprisingly deft way. No afterschool special emphasis, just acknowledging facts and differing opinions.

I love every character, including the secondaries: Maia, Raphael, Meliorn, and their actors. The primaries are gorgeous and decent to amazing actors, too. How can you go wrong with a cast including precious gems like Emerald and Jade (Emeraude Toubia and Jade Hassoune')?

And I confess, I'm a staunch Malec fan. Smit. I tell you, I am in deeeep smit.

Watch it--it starts out light and fluffy--second season gets more serious, and by then you've already fallen in smit with the characters.

The Librarians lures you in the same way (as did Buffy The Vampire Slayer in its time - the best shows always do :D) I reciprocally recommend you watch The Librarians if you get the chance, and you haven't already. In this case, though, I think it helps to watch the TV movies first, just to get the context, but the series is better, of course :)

I've seen all the tv movies, I've had a fondness for Wyle since ER--it wasn't strong enough to keep me watching Falling Skies, though. And I started watching Librarians when it first aired, but Rebecca Romijn just cranks me the wrong way, I wanted to bitch slap Jones and pinch Cassandra's head off. Which left me with Larroquette, whom I've loved since Night Court, and Chris Kane, who was so very disappointingly *not* Eliot Spencer. I tried to perservere, but basically, I was bored, irritated, and disappointed. Maybe I should skip to season whatever they're in now--surely they've knocked the quirks and edges off by now?

Honestly, I just really wanted more Leverage, and this wasn't it.

I do agree about Buffy, though. I sort of slipped from Buffy/Angel/Firefly fandom to SPN. With Farscape, the Stargates, BSG, Lost, and Heroes along the way.

Ah, the odds were stacked against you enjoying Librarians, weren't they? :D I found it entertaining, but I didn't have Leverage to compare it with. Like you, I went from Buffy/Angel/Firefly to SPN, but I skipped past the others. I loved the Stargate movie but skipped the TV since it didn't have James Spader in it. Deal breaker :D I watched a couple of seasons of Lost but then decided the writers were just taking the piss and dropped it. Fortunately, I could do that, because I hadn't started writing a mammoth epic fan-fiction serial about it :P

Ha, yeah! I forgot to mention that.

The most recent ep was directed by Peter Deluise. He hasn't directed any SPN eps, but he's directed a lot of shows filmed in Van (Shadowhunters films in Toronto and around Ontario)--and he played a fed in Jus in Bello.

It hit that young-handsome-vulnerable-oh so pretty-shallow but fun spot for me that S1&S2 SPN did for me all those seasons ago. I hope you like it!

I warned somebody on DW that I'm a dedicated Malec shipper. But I love the whole cast--even the villain. He's such an *amazingly hateable* villain!

I hope you like it--I've been missing a show I can squee about, and fellow fans to squee with!

OMG, Milly, everything is Oh So Pretty! All the actors--even the ones playing secondary characters and recurrings are just amazingly attractive. It's amazing how well they build and sustain belief in this preposterous premise.

And, did I mention? Pretty!!

I just checked out the book from the library (since I always feel like I need to read before watching...?) and will give the show a shot. Not sure I'm ready to let anything besides SPN into my heart yet, but I'll def give it a try!

I've never read the books--I have the first one on order, and I'm keeping an open mind and hoping for the best. Just...word of caution: do NOT watch The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones movie before you watch the show. If I'd seen that first I'd likely never given the series a glance. The show does an entirely different and much better job with the story.

Tell me what you think after you've seen an ep or two. It takes about three before you fall into it, I think.

I know! Actually it was the stills and clips and gifs on Tumblr that made me want to check the series out.
