Nobody in life has ever worn a "jean". We wear jeans. We are jeans-clad. If your character is jean-clad (or jean clad), does that mean they're wearing only one pant leg? Jeans. Jeans clad. Thank you.
Point. I have heard of "fetch me a scissors," which though plural is still treated as a singular noun.
I had a similar argument with a beta reader once over the "backs of his hands," which she insisted would be "the back of his hands." I snuck in after post and changed it back--it just felt so wrong to me.
Anyone must write as they like, of course. I'll still shudder when it's "wrong."
