so far, so good...
Oct. 16th, 2014 12:16 pmI've been sort of quiet about S10 so far. I've taken a step back from meta and deeper discussion, from my own speculation about where I think events are likely to go, from expressing where I'd like to see things go.
I've come to a sort of epiphany about SPN. While it's my show, it doesn't belong to me. I don't write the scripts, I don't break stories, I don't hand down notes from the network. While SPN staff has interacted a lot with fans over the years, and have indicated they listen to "what the fans want to see," I'm not sure that pressure has any real effect. I think writers and directors get fiendish glee out of, "Giving 'em what they say they want, but with a vicious twist!" For example, fans (me included) have wished for seasons we'd get a bodyswap episode, and we did--just not a Sam and Dean switch. Or we've wanted another "Bitch." "Jerk." exchange. And finally we get one--and this one left a bitter taste.
It may be my show, but it doesn't belong to me and I'm just along for the ride the writers give us, however much I may like or hate it. If the dislike overbalances my abiding love, it'll be time for me to stop watching. That point hasn't been reached yet and, in fact, there are definitely things I'm liking about the season so far.
I'm reading other fans' thoughts, and I'll comment when so moved. But for now, I'm keeping a little distance and a wait and see attitude.
