Ten Day Meme
Feb. 28th, 2015 04:52 pmDay 5 - Six songs that you’re addicted to
I suck so hard at this, guys. I'm not addicted to songs, I don't actually *do* songs, I do scores, and soundtracks.
1. From Cirque du Soleil's Dralion, sung by Agnes Sohier and the inimitable Erik Karol:
Miracula Aeternitatis, Stella Errans, Ballare, Kamande
2. Incidental music from Firefly, by Greg Edmonson
3. A Childhood Remembered--various artists, Narada
4. Into the West, Annie Lennox
5. Bonny Portmore, Loreena McKennitt
6. Canyon Trilogy, Carlos Nakai
With Canyon Trilogy and A Childhood Remembered, the tracks segue from one to the other, from years of listening to them, pre-shuffle.
This was hard, y'all.

Date: 2015-03-01 07:35 pm (UTC)I've followed Arkenstone, and Tingstad and Rumbel, just from the single track on Childhood they had. I don't think T&R have done anything I dislike, and Arkenstone's In the Wake of the Wind is a neck-and-neck favorite with Childhood. Storytelling--Arkenstone's a master.

Date: 2015-03-01 07:44 pm (UTC)You can find the Dralion stuff on YT, but be sure and search for 'Erik Karol Dralion'. They've had other countertenors in the role, but in my opinion, Erik's best--his effective range is phenomenal. In the Miracula Aeternitatis, he goes from high soprano to a deep, booming baritone--as often as I've heard it, it still sends chills up my spine. Agnes is the perfect counterpoint, too--their voices blend and augment each other so well.
The Firefly tracks are on YT, as is McKennitt's Bonny Portmore, and of course, Lennox's Into the West is off the Return of the King soundtrack, available on YT, as is the whole Nakai album.

Date: 2015-03-01 08:01 pm (UTC)Do you remember in Last of the Mohicans, where Magwa marched his braves and the captive Alice along the cliff trail? That trail is no longer open to the public, as the state park system doesn't have the money for the necessary constant upkeep. But when they *did*, I've walked that trail and gazed out at the spectacular 180 degree view. Amazing. The town stitched along the riverbank between the cliffs is called, after the rock formation, Chimney Rock (just down the road from Bat Cave, NC!). Largely touristy, there's an element of early half-century 1900s southern town there, too, with some Cherokee influence. Up a shaky wooden staircase at the side of a building go a series of bare footprints in yellow paint, to a shop called Feathers, that sells carvings, worked leather goods (necklaces, purses, moccasins, various pouches), sage smudging bundles, feather fans, incense, silver jewelry, and esoteric CDs. The proprietor, balding on top but his remaining hair to his shoulders, wearing wire-rimmed glasses, a leather vest over his jeans and flowered button-down, and hiking boots, will special-order CDs for you from a huge online inventory, on the computer.
The CDs bring as much memory-pleasure as aural pleasure. As I said elsewhere, Nakai's lack of predictable melody gives me a kind of peace I don't find with European-origin style music. Hello, fellow fan!

Date: 2015-03-02 01:45 am (UTC)Yeah. If I could have been anybody in history? I'd have been Jane Goodall. Give me two months' supplies and a notepad, and let me sit and watch the chimps' interaction, and I'm all good.
It's what I do at gatherings I'm not leading or responsible for. I edge back into a comfy corner and observe human behavior and interaction. So far I've resisted taking out the notepad...
I like people. Just--one or two at a time. I know, I'm weird.
