I read a quite nice J2 fic last night, well-written, good characterization, interesting plot. But the fourth or fifth time I found myself skipping a two page sex scene...

...well, it reminded me of why I stopped reading Gabaldon. It's like Tolkien: walk, walk, walk, stop to eat, walk, walk, walk while singing about eating, walk, walk, walk, stop to eat, only with sex instead of second (third, fourth) breakfast.

I realize some of us are in it for the smexin'. But me? I'm easily bored with two pages of every eight devoted to knocking boots. And *two pages?* Every time? That's more repetition on a theme than my story-craving heart can accept. But that's just me.

Ditto. I generally don't bother reading PWP and I find extensive sex scenes in other stories kind of tiresome unless the sex is really integral to the plot and it is written really well.

Your comment about Gabaldon made me LOL. I liked the first three books, felt a little meh about the fourth one, and then gave up on the fifth one half-way through. It was too much chicken raising trivia interspersed with torrid sex scenes. YAWN.

I'm a mix, I am guilty of some hot lovin' scenes, but I much prefer to write/read lyrical accounts of sex. You know, a little flowery but generally the less is more approach.

I know what you mean.
I like well written sex when it fits the story.
With "Refugee" for example I didn't even knew for a long time if there would be a J2 sex scene.

That's so funny that you said that. I sometimes find myself quickly skimming the sexy parts, and then saying "Hey, what are you doing? You're supposed to be reading the porn, too!" I have a short attention span.

For me, it depends on my mood and my expectations. If I'm looking to read the smexin' I'm not going to pick a story where THEY MUST SAVE THE WORLD! Because I get annoyed with all the sex when they should be SAVING THE WORLD!

But yeah, if the summary is something like they meet, they fall in love, some conflict happens, can they work it out? Then I'm more prepared for pages and pages of sex.

If sex is an action scene where it developes something between the two (or three) then I'm all for it. Let them work something out, let there be conflict, let one take one thing from it and the other take another, let one of them use it to tell the other something that complicates their relationship.

But yeah, most of the time I skim.
