Scientists and statisticians have monitored falling birth rates for decades, helpless as declining fertility predicted possible human extinction. But a new ray of hope was discovered; boys are tested in their twelfth year, and the small percentage who are capable of conceiving are taken, separated for education and training in their new way of life. At eighteen, each is assigned to the man who will father the children he will bear. Jensen missed his testing; his status is discovered when he's an adult. Unprepared, untrained, and unwilling, he's assigned to Jared. Jared is conflicted by his desire to father children, his growing love for the man placed in his care, and sympathy for Jensen's difficulty adjusting to the changes in his life. Resentful and rebellious, Jensen finds unexpected strength and support from the man he should hate.

HOLY FRICKING COW BATMAN. This is ... I can't even... I cried so many times for the anguish and the hurt and the love in such a incredibly fucked up situation. And yes, there was so much in there, so much we take for granted in our greener pastures but that others are as far from as they can possibly get. The feelings and the decidedly 'not-the-easy-way-out' you pulled in with the inevitable end of Jared finally, finally pulling his weight, opening his own life and both of them working to make a whole out of something fractured and mechanical even though they trained themselves to view it as a wholesome relationship,... but that still had to be enough for a time because otherwise they'd have broken, well, that was like mindblowing.

I have to admit I do have a 'thing' for mpreg, particularly with an unwilling impregnee (if there is such a word). I really don't want to look too hard into what that all says about me. I loved the progression of their relationship, especially as Jensen had such an abrupt induction into his new life. I enjoyed it as a thoroughly good story which kept me captivated and rooting for the two protagonists. BTW I would love a sequel especially if they decide to fight against Repro. Thanks for such a fab story xx

This was fantastic - I was absolutely riveted from start to finish. You did a great job of depicting a world that makes you think there but for the grace of god without being heavy-handed about it, and you conveyed the horror of it without resorting to beating the reader about the head with it. I really hurt for Jensen (did he ever have to take the anti-depressants etc, I wonder?) and Jared was patience personified.

And they fight, yes?
:)

I was up until 2.30am reading your story (thank God I'm on holidays). I couldn't put it down! I nearly stood up and cheered for Jared when he told Jensen that if they married, he had to accept the kids also. I hurt for Jensen's situation, and I loved Jared for his love and patience. Such a wonderful story!

I just wanted to let you know what a beautifully written and well thought out story this was. Nothing was glossed over or rushed. Loved the ending. When the first baby was born and was a boy, my immediate thought was, what if he's a ciever? Jared would finally understand where Jensen was coming from. How do you handle that as a parent? "What are you willing to do?" Awesome last line. Because, as any parent will tell you, we are willing to do anything for our kids.

Well done!

Anne

Oh wow, loooved this story!
And I agree, sadly, in a lot of parts in the world women are still put into traditional roles of child-bearer and caretaker... Thankfully, I grew up in Germany and can be who I want to be. Slowly the traditional roles are broken up - if people want to. Personally, I don't mind getting children and taking care of them, but when I want, how I want :) By now it's much easier for men to take time off the job to take care of their children as well, so the law is helping by a)trying to open traditionally male roles to women and at the same time b) trying to open traditionally female roles to men.
I know that in Africa, Tunesia is one country that has by law stated equal rights to women, but the other countries in North Africa haven't...
Personally, I believe that in the US (did a study abroad semester) there is a lot of focus on appearance, how you look etc., and that's the first problem. Women are supposed to be concerned with how they look and to look pretty and please the men. If you spend lots of time on being pretty, chances are you don't spend too much time with studying or learning a good job. Part of being pretty is of course shopping - US girls have to go shopping... 'hanging out at the mall' is such a weird concept to me... and shoes are majorly important. Why? Also, 'being a little princess' is sooo ingrained into US society... if a little girl is a little princess, it means she will look pretty and not go to work and adore her prince charming and have pretty little children. Why are all the girls pushed into little princesses? Weird thing... ah, and beauty competitions... why would anyone voluntarily prime their little girl for beauty competitions??? But as long as the majority of people believe and want that, my guess it that not much will change in the US.

This was an amazing fic. I was impressed at the span of time it covered and how well it was done. My heart broke that Jensen just wouldn't deal with the children or cared about the pregnancy as a whole--but it was so well done.

Love the characterization in this! The only thing that threw me, was when it stated J2's ages as forty something...but said the oldest son was only 5? Unless I read it wrong. But that seemed incredibly weird. If it all started when Jensen was 24, then by the time he got around to meeting the kids...JJ would be like...graduating. Watch your POV's in sections, they tended to flip back and forth a little, but like I said, the story was amazing and the emotion could be felt through it. <3<3<3

Great job honey!!

I read the pdf this summer and I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed reading this story. I thought the world that you built here was compelling. I also thought that you wrote Jared and Jensen's POVs here pretty realistically. I didn't always agree with how they handled stuff (Jensen's reaction to the children, Jared's approach to Jensen in the beginning) but I thought it made sense. I may not be making sense but I found it an interesting read and it certainly made me think. Thank you for sharing it.
