Scientists and statisticians have monitored falling birth rates for decades, helpless as declining fertility predicted possible human extinction. But a new ray of hope was discovered; boys are tested in their twelfth year, and the small percentage who are capable of conceiving are taken, separated for education and training in their new way of life. At eighteen, each is assigned to the man who will father the children he will bear. Jensen missed his testing; his status is discovered when he's an adult. Unprepared, untrained, and unwilling, he's assigned to Jared. Jared is conflicted by his desire to father children, his growing love for the man placed in his care, and sympathy for Jensen's difficulty adjusting to the changes in his life. Resentful and rebellious, Jensen finds unexpected strength and support from the man he should hate. Date: 2011-07-28 08:37 am (UTC)And I agree, sadly, in a lot of parts in the world women are still put into traditional roles of child-bearer and caretaker... Thankfully, I grew up in Germany and can be who I want to be. Slowly the traditional roles are broken up - if people want to. Personally, I don't mind getting children and taking care of them, but when I want, how I want :) By now it's much easier for men to take time off the job to take care of their children as well, so the law is helping by a)trying to open traditionally male roles to women and at the same time b) trying to open traditionally female roles to men.
I know that in Africa, Tunesia is one country that has by law stated equal rights to women, but the other countries in North Africa haven't...
Personally, I believe that in the US (did a study abroad semester) there is a lot of focus on appearance, how you look etc., and that's the first problem. Women are supposed to be concerned with how they look and to look pretty and please the men. If you spend lots of time on being pretty, chances are you don't spend too much time with studying or learning a good job. Part of being pretty is of course shopping - US girls have to go shopping... 'hanging out at the mall' is such a weird concept to me... and shoes are majorly important. Why? Also, 'being a little princess' is sooo ingrained into US society... if a little girl is a little princess, it means she will look pretty and not go to work and adore her prince charming and have pretty little children. Why are all the girls pushed into little princesses? Weird thing... ah, and beauty competitions... why would anyone voluntarily prime their little girl for beauty competitions??? But as long as the majority of people believe and want that, my guess it that not much will change in the US.

Date: 2011-08-14 11:45 pm (UTC)Love the characterization in this! The only thing that threw me, was when it stated J2's ages as forty something...but said the oldest son was only 5? Unless I read it wrong. But that seemed incredibly weird. If it all started when Jensen was 24, then by the time he got around to meeting the kids...JJ would be like...graduating. Watch your POV's in sections, they tended to flip back and forth a little, but like I said, the story was amazing and the emotion could be felt through it. <3<3<3
Great job honey!!

Date: 2011-08-15 04:27 am (UTC)I do need to find where you got the impression the Js were in their forties, and fix that. Um, no. The story spans a little less than seven years from the time Jensen arrives at Jared's house until the final scene, so Jensen is thirty, thirty-one, Jared is thirty-three or so, by the end. I never actually gave Jared's age, but I always thought of him as not more than two or three years older than Jensen. I can't think where I gave the impression they were in their forties. Now you've got me worried.
