I shouldn't tell you people about cinnamon grahams spread with Nutella and Dickinson's coconut curd, huh? Actually, someone gave me a jar of Nutella, and this is the only way I can eat it. I fail to see the attraction, otherwise.

...I should buy stock in Dickinsons.

OH makes a vat of vegebarleybeef soup several times a year, particularly welcome in winter. He offered a quart to the next door neighbor, who said, "Oh, I couldn't eat that much!" and accepted a pint, instead. This afternoon we found the pint container on the back steps with homemade oatmeal chocolate chip cookies inside. I'm liking this arrangement!

Minton's Haddon Hall plate, cup, and saucer, thrifted sugar and creamer, Portmeirion "A Fine Romance" teapot. It pleases me the tea towel has herbs printed in purple and green.

this afternoon. I achieved my goal of finding it in a theater that's deeper, screen to seat, than the one where we saw it first. Our seat tier was higher, as well, which gave a much better perspective on the screen. The video was possibly clearer, plus, of course, we knew what was happening. Anyhow, it was thoroughly enjoyable, especially after reading various meta and theory on characters and story.

In other news, the thermometer says it's cooler today than yesterday. I suspect the thermometer is lying. If it wasn't for the shortening of the daylight, I'd be eager for October, ITYW. And in other, other news, supper this evening will be a bowl of steamed broccoli served with coarse sea salt, because it's too damned hot for meat or starch. There may be ice cream after. Or popsicles.

It's cloudy, there's mirk wandering up the mountainside, it's not actually raining, not yet, anyway, but there's rain in the forecast. It is currently 64F, with a predicted high of 71F, and a low overnight of 51F.

For the last several weeks I've been wearing tee shirts so old and washed so thin you could read through them. Every fan we own has run nonstop, from early morning, when we pull cool air from the woods behind us into the house, push it through the house, and exhaust it out the front windows, until well after dark, when we've set all the fans to pull cool air in from outside.

Today? I am wearing *sleeves* and should someone come to the door or I have to run an errand, I am decent enough not to scare the horses, or small children. There's not a fan running in the house. It's positively *gloomy* outside today, and I want to go dance under the grey and lowering sky.

Friends, I left NC for the PNW for a reason. Today I have my PNW weather back, and welcome!

I think I might have something for dinner other than raw crudites and hummus, dark lettuce, cottage cheese, olives, boiled eggs/egg salad, fresh fruit, and popsicles.

1. What is the meaning behind your LJ name?
2. What was your favourite childhood book or books?
3. What is your favourite recipe and why? Try to post the recipe if you have time.
4. What are the top 5 things on your wish list & have you done any of them?
5. What do you collect?

I'm choosing to interpret this as my favorite recipe to prepare, as opposed to my favorite to consume.

The motto in my house has always been, "I feed people, and they don't get sick and they don't die. H cooks."

He's food-talented. He has the fingers, the nose, the ability to take raw ingredients and make magic. Me? I get sustenance on the table, and it's edible, if mostly indifferent. I did have three never-fail recipes my kids loved, though. I had a very discouraged twenty-something visiting, who dropped his head on my shoulder and pleaded, "Mom? Make me tuna casserole?" Herewith:

Two-thirds of a bag of Mueller's wide egg noodles
One can cream of mushroom soup
One can (6 oz) solid white tuna in water
Tsp minced onion, if desired, or dash onion and/or garlic powder
Handful of frozen green peas

Cook noodles to package directions, about six minutes. Throw in handful of peas.
Open and drain tuna, put in bowl and tease compacted tuna chunks and flakes apart with a fork.
Open soup.
Drain cooked noodles and peas, put in bowl with tuna. Add soup, undiluted, and minced onion, or onion and/or garlic powder, as desired. Toss gently to coat noodles and tuna evenly. Sprinkle surface with black pepper. Serve immediately.

The second fail-proof kid recipe is Pizza Soup. Especially good for recovering Sick Kids.

Can condensed tomato soup
2 oz. bulk mozzarella cheese (a good handful, when diced)
Dash garlic and/or onion powder, if desired
Two slices bread
Tsp crushed dried basil

Prepare canned tomato soup to label directions, diluting with water and not milk. Stir in onion and/or garlic powder, as desired. While soup heats, dice moz and put a layer in the bottom of a soup plate,* set plate on dinner plate or serving tray. Toast bread, when done, cut diagonally into "points." Arrange toast points around soup plate on tray. Pour hot soup over diced cheese. Sprinkle surface with basil. Serve.

*a soup plate, rather than a bowl, allows the cheese to melt uniformly, and spread out, rather than clump together in the bottom of a bowl.

Anything more complicated than this, or mac&cheese (cook elbows, shred sharp cheddar, drain noodles and return to pan, add pat of butter, 1/4 cup milk, stir in cheese, sprinkle surface with paprika, serve) will have to call upon the maestro.

Thankful

Quiet dinner at home, just the two of us. Legless turkey (we don't care for the legs), stuffed, nonetheless, with OH's mom's stuffing, which is basically meatloaf with giblets ground in. Cooked in proximity to the bird is paramount, however, since they meld flavors and both are better than either cooked alone. There have been fork wars for my MiL's stuffing. Coined sweet potatoes braised in coconut oil with ginger, black pepper, garlic, and dill. Broccoli for green, dusted with coarse sea salt, and the traditional horseradish and sour cream sauce, made instead this year with plain yogurt. And jellied cranberry sauce straight from the can, because we likes it that way, precious.

Pumpkin pie from scratch, baked Wednesday. The filling was beaten before pouring into the shell, and the pie came out light, fluffy, and delicious. There was also fresh-baked pumpkin-walnut bread, warmed and served with a dollop of plain yogurt.

We and our little house hunkered against high winds and lashing rain, and were very thankful for high ground and sheltering trees. There are flood watches today all around us, so I hope everyone stays safe.

So, the hoosband is making chicken curry for himself, and it's scenting the whole house. I'm not especially fond of the scent of curry, though the exhaust fan is dealing, mostly, at least to the point it's bearable. I like eating curry a lot more than smelling it. Unfortunately, it has potatoes, which are nightshades, and along with tomatoes and peppers, I can't eat them. Well, I can, but I'd pay for it for days after. Not worth it.

So, I'm having a spinach and mushroom omelette, with every cheese we have in the house. Except... *Somebody* left this container of roasted almonds by my chair, and now *someone* seems to have eaten, um, quite a lot of them, one after the other. Now, who on earth let that happen, I wonder?

H just made me the most incredible spinach and mushroom omelette for lunch. Garlic, onion, extra sharp cheddar, ricotta, mozzie, and a little asiago-romano-parm mix, just for fun.

Kill me now, I die happy.
